Athens, Greece — A 77-year old man has committed suicide in front of the Greek parliament to protest the worsening conditions and economic crisis Greece is facing.

The retired pharmacist shot himself in the head using a hand gun near to a subway exit on central Syntagma Square. He declared that he wanted to end it with dignity before having to resort to eating out of the dumpster. Eye witnesses say he was screaming about his debts moments before shooting himself.

Syntagma square has been the central stage of anti-austerity protests

Anti-austerity protesters pinned notes on a tree where the man committed suicide declaring “austerity kills” and “it was murder, not suicide.”

Greece has been in a recession since 2008. Since then, suicide rates have gone up by forty percent.
