“I call on those involved in the Zapatista movement to seek ways to unite together, to work together, to reconcile and to seek ways in improving the living conditions, of work, in Chiapas, and throughout the country,” the politician said at a rally addressing his constituency.

His call is intended to win over the favour of the electorate, Generaccion reports.

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation is a grassroots revolutionary leftist movement that declared war on the Mexican state in 1994, but has not fired a shot since. It has set up “councils of good government” that operate on the basis of popular assemblies and participatory democracy.

The Party of the Democratic Revolution was formed as a merger between the far-left Unified Socialist Party of Mexico, the left-wing Socialist Mexican Party, and left-wing Mexican Workers’ Party, as well as the “Eurocommunist” Mexican Communist Party, but has since moved to social-democratic positions.
