Gay rights activists arrested

In Europe on April 7, 2012 at 6:45 pm

Saint Petersburg, Russia — Police have arrested two gay rights activists for wearing a sign saying “being gay is normal” which is said to violate a law bans the “promotion of homosexuality” or bisexuality and “gay propaganda” to minors.

The two men, whose identities were not disclosed, were detained on Thursday after picketing against the above mentioned law, which came into effect on March. St. Petersburg is one of four regions in Russia to impose fines for the dissemination of “gay propaganda” to minors. Critics of the law argue it is easily abusable and could be used to silence any mention of homosexuality.

The law that banned “gay propaganda” brought strong protests from Russian and international LGBT community and LGBT rights advocacy groups.
