Makhachkala, Russia — Christoper Samba, a Congolese international, transfered from the English football club Blackburn Rovers to Anzhi Makhachkala — located in the capital of the Republic of Dagestan — and  has since been exposed to severe racism in Russian football, the People reports.

Samba has been subject to racism in Russian football. He cites an example of a banana being hurled at him in a match between Anzhi Makhachkala and Lokomotiv Moscow, which almost brought him to tears.

“I try not to dwell on racism. I just want to believe that the problem doesn’t exist on a global scale,” Samba told the People. “I never felt discriminated against in France or in England, it wasn’t something I was ever confronted with or had to deal with. They say in Moscow there are not many black people, so it’s more of a prevalent problem but that doesn’t make it right, does it?,” he continued. According to Samba Samuel Eto’o and Roberto Carlos have lived through similar experiences. “Eto’o said an African can’t get depressed if someone throws a banana at him. And the manager – Guus Hiddink – just told me to ignore it because he knows Russian football and the real fans are not like that.”

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union racism, fasicsm, and ultranationalism have flourished in Russian society with between 50 and 100 racist murders each year. Amnesty International estimates the number of neo-Nazis in Russia to be 85,000, more than half the number of neo-Nazis world wide. Neo-Nazis are primarily centred around major cities such as Moscow. The Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy found that over half of Africans in Moscow had been physically attacked in the past. Jews, people from the Caucasus, Africans, and Asians are common targets.
