Racist anti-gypsy protest in Serbia

In Europe on April 9, 2012 at 6:39 pm

Belgrade, Serbia — Ultra-nationalist Serbian thugs protested a new gypsy establishment in Belgrade on Monday.

20 gypsy families are being moved from their slums into a new housing settlement in Belgrade. A group of extremist nationalists attempted to attack this settlement by hurling stones, but mostly hit police officers. According to the police, twelve police officers and two protesters were hurt in the clashes.

Roughly seven percent of the Serbian population is gypsy (0.5 million). The gypsy or roma community often faces harassment from ultra-nationalists. A Belgrade court on Monday confirmed a two-year suspended prison sentence for a man who hurled a fire bomb into one of the houses prepared for a gypsy family that was resettled from Belgrade to another Serbian village in 2009.
