PARIS, France — The far-left candidate and former Trotskyist,  Jean-Luc Melenchon, who is participating in France’s presidential campaign says his country should reach out to China and resist US hegemony.

Melenchon of the Left Front party who is a self-proclaimed anticapitalist is expected to make a relatively strong showing in Sunday’s first round elections, but is expected to lose to social capitalist Francois Hollande and the current President Nicolas Sarkozy who are expected to advance to the final runoff.

Melenchon called international finance “parasitic.” Melencho is supported by the Communist Party, and he criticised US hegemony and military might, looking instead to China for partnership.

He said there is “a common interest between China and France” especially in development and international relation, as China continues its hyper-capitalist and fundamentally profit driven system while suppressing the Chinese New Left. The policies pursued by China’s Communist Party have lead to a higher income inequality than exists in the United States. China is currently expanding its empire by stealing land in Africa, and investing in corporate interests in Latin America as well as Africa, thereby challenging the US as the world’s imperialist superpower.
